Over the years, I’ve tried hundreds of skincare products which all promise to do the one thing I wanted them to do – help prevent excess oil throughout the day. During this time, I envied those with a matte complexion who didn’t need to apply powder to their t-zone 3 times a day – however after much experimenting – I’ve found the products to help my makeup stay on and keep my shine at bay!
Before name-dropping my latest favourites, I wanted to share some of the products that weren’t so kind to my skin. It’s no secret to anyone that oily skin leads to a girl’s worst enemy – spots. During the peak of my teenage years, I suffered from spots so decided to test the Clinique Anti-Blemish range, which included a foam wash, cleanser and cream. I would say this was the first premium skincare range that I invested in, so I guess I had high expectations! To my dismay, the products were way too harsh for my skin and left it feeling dry and painful. I tried to continue using the range, but after a while it ended half empty at the back of a drawer somewhere! At the age of 19, I can finally say that I rarely get spots anymore.
So, it was out with the old and in with the new! One product that I had tried and loved is the Soap & Glory Peaches and Clean Deep Cleansing Milk. I’m a self confessed Soap & Glory lover, from the divine smells to the fun and fearless branding – I can’t get enough. The cleansing milk is a 3-in-1 product, which also removes makeup and impurities from the face whilst re-energising your skin by increasing oxygen and nutrient delivery – pretty impressive stuff don’t you think? And as for the smell: peach and goji berry extracts that are rich in antioxidants and vitamins A & C. In my opinion, it does what it says on the tin, and was another Soap & Glory item that failed to disappoint me once again. The product is an affordable £8 and is available from Boots or the Soap & Glory website.
The next two products are two products that you’ve probably heard before, but I’m going to vouch for their amazingness anyway! The first is the Urban Decay All Nighter Make Up Setting Spray, which is one of my favourite beauty products. I received this as a Christmas present and so far it’s going down a treat! As well as this, it’s oil free so it really does help with keeping makeup on and prevents it from slipping off. I’ve used this spray for nights out, as the product suggests and have also used it for days out. I spent New Years in Barcelona and this product was a lifesaver – at night my makeup looked exactly as it had done when I left in the morning!
The next product definitely isn’t shy of attention in the industry, and that’s the POREfessional: Matte Rescue by Benefit. This product is a water-based gel that absorbs excess oil and reduces the appearances of pores, leaving your skin with a matte finish. Since using this product, I’ve noticed a huge improvement in the excess oil that accumulates throughout the day. It smells so fresh and fruity and is a beautiful blue colour when it comes out of the tube, which then turns clear when rubbed in. At the end of each day, there is still a little bit of excess oil on my skin when I finish work – this is an improvement on normal and I don’t need to use any powder throughout the day like I normally would have to. Benefit recommend using this product with the POREfessional primer – but I’ve yet to try this!
After running out of a moisturiser, I found myself in my local Boots store frantically searching for one which might do my skin some justice! After spending ages looking and comparing, I picked up the Nivea Daily Essentials Oil Free Moisturising Day Cream. It was extremely affordable, costing under £5 for a 50ml bottle. It’s designed for oily and combination skin, which leaves my face feeling fresh and nourished without causing a build up of oil and shine on my face. As well as doing its job – it smells so delicious so I would definitely recommend it.
I hope that you’ve enjoyed reading all about my oily skin secrets! If you’ve got any thoughts about any of the products I’ve written about, leave a comment below!
